Seminaries & Theological Colleges in the United States

Theological colleges and seminaries are colleges that train students in theology and religious studies. Many students at these schools, or seminarians, go onto join churches as ministers and clergy. Seminaries can be nondenominational or represent the Episcopal, Anglican, Catholic, Baptist and other denominations of Christianity. There are approximately 300 accredited theological schools in the United States.
  1. Episcopal and Catholic

    • The Episcopal shares some tenants with the Anglican and Catholic churches. The largest difference is that in the Episcopal Church women study to be ordained as ministers along with men. Episcopal seminaries and theological schools in the U.S. include: the Nashotah House (nashotah.edu) in Nashotah, Wisconsin; the Bexley Hall Seminary (bexley.edu) in Rochester, New York; and Church Divinity School of the Pacific (cdsp.edu) in Berkley, California.

Catholicism is the oldest denomination of Christianity. The most well-known Catholic theological school is the University of Notre Dame Department of Theology (theology.nd.edu). Other schools include the Saint Francis Seminary (sfs.edu) in St. Francis, Wisconsin and the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry (bc.edu/stm).

United Church of Christ and Lutheran

    • The Lutheran church was established to follow the teachings of Martin Luther. Luther's church reform activism against the Catholic church started the Protestant revolution. Lutheran seminaries include: the Trinity Lutheran Seminary (tlsohio.edu) in Columbus, Ohio; the Wartburg Theological Seminary (wartburgseminary.edu) in Dubuque, Iowa; and the Lutheran School of Theology (lstc.edu) in Chicago.

The United Church of Christ is a mainline Protestant church. It is a more liberal Christian sect, but the UCC has some influences from Lutheranism. The United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (unitedseminary.edu), the Chicago Theological Seminary (ctschicago.edu) and the Bangor Theological Seminary (bts.edu) in Maine are three of the United Church of Christ's theological schools.

    Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian

    • Methodist seminaries teach students faith learned from Anglican and Protestant traditions, such as the Godhead and free will with the grace of God for salvation. Two Methodist institutions are the Payne Theological Seminary (payne.edu) in Ohio and the Boston University School of Theology (bu.edu/sth).

Baptists believe in the baptism of older converts and believers rather than baptizing infants. The Central Baptist Theological Seminary (cbts.edu) in Kansas, the American Baptist Seminary of the West (absw.edu) in Berkeley, California and the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (crcds.edu) in New York are three of the many Baptist divinity schools.

Presbyterian churches are a Protestant sect influenced by Calvinism. Presbyterians believe that grace is given by God and the Bible is the authority. Three of the seminaries that train Presbyterian clergy are the Memphis Theological Seminary (memphisseminary.edu), the Erskine Theological Seminary (seminary.erskine.edu) in South Carolina and the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (austinseminary.edu).

    Reformed and Pentacostal

    • Pentecostalism is a Christian faith that believes in a personal and spiritual communication and faith between God and believers. Urshan Graduate School of Theology (urshan.ccsct.com/) in Florissant, Missouri, the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (agts.edu) in Springfield, Missouri and the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (ptseminary.edu) in Cleveland, Tennessee are Pentecostal theological schools.

The Reformed Church is influenced by Calvinist teachings and there are numerous denominations that consider themselves Reformed. Reformed seminaries include the New Brunswick Theological Seminary (nbts.edu) in New Jersey, the Calvin Theological Seminary (calvinseminary.edu) in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the Earlham School of Religion (esr.earlham.edu) in Indiana.
