Theological Seminaries in the United States

Theological seminaries are higher education institutions that are designed to educate and train students in theology and prepare them for careers in ministry, clergy, missions and other religious positions. Seminaries offer degree programs at the graduate degree and certificate levels that focus on the principles of the Bible and Christianity.
  1. New York Theological Seminary

    • Located in New York City, the New York Theological Seminary was founded in 1900 and offers master's programs in divinity, pastoral care, urban affairs and professional studies. A Doctor of Ministry is also available at the seminary. Areas of focus within the doctoral program include congregational ministries, pastoral care, executive ministries and counseling ministries. Students also have an opportunity to pursue a certificate in Christian ministry, which is available on campus and online.

    Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

    • The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is located in Forth Worth, Texas, and focuses on Christian ministry and prepares students to work in churches and missions around the world. Educational opportunities are available in theology, evangelism and missions, church and family ministries, and church music. Numerous centers and research institutes are also available on campus, including the Baptist Marriage and Family Counseling Center, Center for Biblical Stewardship and Center for Theological Research.

    Fuller Theological Seminary

    • While the main campus of the Fuller Theological Seminary is located in Pasadena, California, six regional satellite campuses are located in Northern California, Arizona, Washington, Colorado and Texas. The Pasadena campus opened in 1937, and the current campus sits on 13 acres with academic buildings, residence halls and offices. The School of Theology offers students an opportunity to pursue programs in biblical studies, Christian leadership, theological studies and practical theology. A Master of Arts in Global Leadership is available online for students at all campuses who live with professional and personal obligations preventing them from attending courses on campus.

    Chicago Theological Seminary

    • The Chicago Theological Seminary is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and has been educating and training Christian leaders for over 150 years, as of 2011. Master's degree programs are available in religious studies, divinity, social service and sacred theology. The Doctor of Ministry program educates students in the critical reflection on ministerial practice, evaluation of new approaches to ministry, and disciplines of strategic pastoral theology. Students can also purse a certificate in theological studies.
