Ivy League Colleges in the United States

There are eight Ivy League colleges in the United States, all of which are located in the northeastern corner of the country. These private institutions are highly regarded for their excellence in academics. Though known for social elitism, the Ivy League schools regularly are ranked among the best colleges in the world.
  1. Harvard

    • The oldest college in the U.S. (est. 1639), Harvard has produced numerous American presidents, great thinkers and writers, and famous cultural figures. Harvard is one of the hardest schools in which to get accepted.

    Princeton

    • Located in New Jersey, Princeton has been ranked the number one university in the country by U.S. News and World Report multiple times (2001 to 2008, consecutively). Princeton's strongest programs are engineering, divinity and theology, and the sciences.

    Yale

    • This Connecticut university has a rich history of producing strong political figures in America. It is a rival with Harvard in both athletics and academics (Harvard-Yale Regatta). Yale has the second largest library in the world.

    Cornell

    • Founded by Ezra Cornell, this university was established without any connection to a religion. It has a diverse number of programs, but the most successful are in liberal arts, engineering, agriculture, and city/regional planning.

    Dartmouth

    • Focusing primarily on medicine, engineering, and business, Dartmouth College is the smallest of the Ivy League schools. Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth is in an isolated part of the country, spurring students to strong campus life participation in athletics and the Greek system.

    Brown

    • Located in the largest city in Rhode Island, Providence, Brown University has the oldest engineering program in the Ivy League. Brown boasts the first African-American school president in the Ivy League, Ruth Simmons.

    Columbia

    • The only Ivy League school in New York City, Columbia University has more Nobel Prize winners than any other college in the world. It also awards Pulitzer Prizes every year. A long list of famous historical persons adorn Columbia's list of alumni.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • Also referred to as simply, "Penn," the University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin. It is one of the largest private universities in the country, with famous programs in business, medicine, and law. It is located in the city of Philadelphia.
