Before they are able to take the nursing board exam for their respective profession, both RNs and LPNs must complete a nursing educational program approved by their state board of nursing. These programs can last anywhere from nine months to four years depending upon the type of degree or certificate obtained. When applying for a license and to take the NCLEX, they will be required to submit a transcript showing completion of a nursing program.
While scores from the nursing board exam are needed to get a nursing license, RNs and LPNs must first apply for a license before they are allowed to test. States review license applications to ensure test takers meet the license criteria before they allow them to test. Submitting a license application usually requires completing an application form, paying a licensing fee, showing proof of completion of an educational program and agreeing to a criminal background check.
Once the license application has been submitted, RNs and LPNs can register for their respective NCLEX exam. Pearson Vue is the company that administers the nursing board exam, so individuals planning to take the test must register on their website. This requires submitting basic information as well as paying the testing fee by credit card, money order or cashier's check. An actual date for the test won't be scheduled until the nursing license application has been approved.
After approving an applicant to take the test, the state board of nursing sends the applicant an authorization to test (ATT) letter. This gives instructions and information which allows applicants for the nursing board exam to schedule an actual test day.
Meeting the requirements for registering and being approved to take the nursing board exam can take time. If you have plans to take the NCLEX during a specific month or time of year, you should plan accordingly and begin submitting your license application and registration a few months prior to this time.
