South College, Asheville, offers an associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology. South College is a private school that's over 100 years old. The associate's program is designed to be completed in two years and has both general education and radiologic requirements. Once a student is admitted to South College, there is a separate admissions process for the radiology program which includes completion of prerequisite courses and an interview with the admissions board.

There are two DeVry University campuses in North Carolina: one in Charlottesville and one in Morrisville. Both offer associate degrees in health information technology, which is their preparation program for becoming an x-ray technician. It's designed to be a four-semester program, if a full-time student. Classes can be taken onsite, online or both. Credits earned can be applied to a bachelor's degree in technical management with a specialization in health information management.
