The surgical technology program at GateWay Community College admits 28 students every fall. Prerequisite courses include anatomy and physiology with lab, introductory algebra and college reading. Applicants can take an assessment test to exempt themselves from the math and reading requirements. They must have a current certification in CPR for health care providers and submit to a criminal background check. If accepted, students must provide immunization records before starting clinical instruction. The estimated cost for the program is about $7,100, as of July 2010. Applicants for the surgical technology program at Aims Community College must have a high school diploma or GED and completed prerequisite courses in biology, English composition, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, human growth and development and medical terminology. Before applying, students must attend a program orientation meeting, at which the program advisers will discuss the rest of the admissions process. These meetings occur the second Tuesday of every month, twice a day. If accepted, students must submit immunization records and complete a tuberculosis test. The surgical technology program at Erwin Technical Center last for 14 months and confers a certificate of completion. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED; however, no prerequisite courses are required. Applicants without a college degree must take an entrance exam that assesses reading, language and math skills. Other requirements include an interview with a program adviser, a criminal background check and proof of a physical exam and immunization. If accepted, students matriculate in the fall. Malcolm X College is the only college in Chicago with a surgical technology program. Application requirements include CPR certification, transcripts, three letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance, scores from the school’s math assessment exam and a resume. Prerequisite courses include English composition, medial terminology, molecular cell biology and anatomy and physiology.
