The two-year associate's degree in surgical technology at Malcolm X College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Students in the program will learn to prepare operating rooms and manage affiliated equipment and supplies and to act as an assistant in the operating room during surgical procedures. The program continually emphasizes the importance of aseptic conditions and makes students hyper-aware of a break in the necessary sterile environment. Applicants to this program must submit Mathematics Compass scores, secondary school transcripts, proof of prerequisite courses including English composition, medical terminology, molecular cellular biology and anatomy and physiology. Applicants must also submit three letters of recommendation along with their application.

Robert Morris University offers an associate in applied science degree in surgical technology. This two-year program provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to carry out aseptic techniques and assisting duties associated with the surgical technologist profession. This degree program prepares students to write the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) national certification examination. Students will learn the fundamentals of preparing surgical equipment and instruments, maintaining a therapeutic environment and handling instruments throughout surgical procedures, after which students will have the opportunity to apply these skills in clinical placements. These rotations take place at affiliated clinics and hospitals including Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Provena Mercy Medical Center and Children's Memorial Hospitals. Prospective students must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent.

Prairie State College offers a surgical technology certificate program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP). This full-time program requires 40 hours per week of in-class education for one year. During this time students will learn what is required to work in operating rooms, doctor's offices, cardiac catheterization labs and more. Graduates of the program write the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCCSI) certification examination for licensure as certified surgical technologists. Applicants must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent as well as several prerequisites including English, math, biology, anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.
