Home to more than 6,400 students, Pennsylvania College of Technology is a public institution in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In 2010, the school ranked 31st among baccalaureate colleges in the northern United States by U.S. News and World Report. The school offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in surgical technology, which requires two full years of full-time study to complete. Among the courses featured in the curriculum are anatomy, medical terminology, asepsis and instrumentation, pathology, information technology, pharmacology, microbiology, speech and social sciences. Graduation requires five clinical rotations. Approximately 77 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Originally established by the Episcopalian Church in 1898 in San Antonio, Texas, St. Philip's College is now a public, two-year institution with more than 10,000 credit and 6,000 non-credit students. The college's surgical technology program requires one year of study to complete and culminates in a certificate of completion. Before enrolling in the program, students must undergo a physical examination, pass a criminal background check and drug screening, and complete prerequisite coursework in microbiology, medical terminology, anatomy and composition. Students who receive admission take classes in aseptic procedures, psychology and surgical procedures. Three clinical rotations are in the curriculum. In addition to federal and state grants and loans, the school offers a limited number of work-study and institutional scholarships. A daycare center is on campus to provide low-cost child care for students' children. There is job placement assistance for all graduates.

Western Career College is a private, for-profit vocational-training school with branches throughout California. The college offers both one-year certificate and two-year associate degree programs at its branches in Citrus Heights and San Jose. Students need only a high school diploma or GED to enroll. The program includes classes in medical terminology, surgical techniques, instrumentation, microbiology, anatomy, pharmacology, medical law, ethics and providing care before and after an operation. Both programs require at least one internship. Eligible students can participate in federal and state grants and loans, institutional scholarships and work-study through the college. The college provides assistance with resume-writing, interview preparation and job searches.
