Athens Technical College is approximately 80 miles northeast of Atlanta and is home to nearly 4,000 students. The college offers an associate's degree in veterinary technology, which requires 21 months of full-time study to complete. The program accepts new students once per year and prefers to admit students with previous experience working or volunteering in veterinary offices or animal shelters. Applicants must also complete courses in mathematics, biology and chemistry prior to beginning the vet tech program. All students complete three internships prior to graduation and take classes in anesthesiology, laboratory technology, exotic animals, surgery and health office management. The college participates in federal, state and veterans' financial aid programs and also provides scholarship and work-study opportunities. Student government and an honor society are available for students to join.

Founded in 1895, Fort Valley State University is a public land-grant college. The university's rural campus located 30 miles southwest of Macon is home to nearly 3,000 undergraduate students, 92 percent of which are from Georgia, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The College of Agriculture, Home Economics and Allied Programs' 4-year veterinary technology program culminates in a bachelor's degree. Students learn the techniques involved in both small and large animal doctoring and take a number of upper-level courses in sciences like biology and chemistry. In addition to federal and state financial aid and scholarship programs, the university offers work study. Fort Valley sponsors 11 intercollegiate sports teams for men and women and six intramural teams. There are nine Greek organizations on campus and more than 70 clubs and student groups.

Founded in 1984, Gwinnett Technical College is a public 2-year community college in Lawrenceville. Before enrolling in the college's associate's degree program in veterinary technology, students must successfully complete courses in mathematics and chemistry. Required courses include psychology, anesthesiology and surgery, and all students complete an internship at a veterinary clinic or hospital prior to graduation. Students in the program can join the Veterinary Technicians' Society as well as five other student organizations and honor societies. Along with federal and state financial aid, the college participates in numerous scholarships. Career placement assistance is available for students, such as a resume referral service, on-campus recruitment events and career fairs. The college offers a guarantee program--if a graduate's employer finds his skills are not adequate, the college will provide her with free retraining.
