Medical Assistant Technical Schools in Georgia

    • A public two-year school, Atlanta Technical College is home to more than 3,100 students and is in the southern portion of Georgia's capital city of Atlanta. The school's medical assisting program culminates in a diploma and takes approximately one year to complete. Program coursework includes English, psychology, mathematics, anatomy and computer science in addition to courses in patient care. An externship at a local physician's office is required. The college participates in federal and state financial aid programs. Childcare is available on-campus for students with children. Job placement assistance is provided for all students. Atlanta Technical College offers a satisfaction guarantee program. If a graduate's employer finds her skills to be inadequate during the first two years her graduation, the school will provide free re-training to help improve her skills.

    South University

    • Founded in 1899, South University is a private institution with branches throughout the southern United States. The school's medical assisting program is offered at the Savannah campus, which is home to 3,100 students. The program results in an Associate of Science degree in the field and is one of the largest offered at the university, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.

      To gain admission to the program, students must take the SAT or ACT tests. All students take classes in business, word processing and computer science, public speaking, composition, psychology, medical billing and clinical laboratory technology and participate in an externship. Tutoring services are available for all students. In addition to state and federal financial aid, South University offers work study programs in the field.

    Chattahoochee Technical College

    • Chattahoochee Technical College is a public, two-year college with seven campuses in Georgia. The medical assisting diploma program at the school is offered at Acworth, Jasper and Marietta. Students can complete the program within 18 months and receive a diploma at graduation. Although admission to the program is open to anyone with a high school diploma or GED, students must take classes in psychology, English and mathematics prior to taking any of the core clinical courses in the field of medical assisting.

      Before taking the clinical courses, students must also obtain a series of immunizations, undergo a criminal background and drug test and purchase malpractice insurance. An externship is among the degree requirements. The college offers specialized, optional study skills programs to help students succeed as well as tutoring services. Financial aid is available for eligible students.
