Becoming a surgical technologist, also known as a surgical technician, operating room technician or scrub, requires nine to 24 months of training, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Surgical tech schools may offer a certificate program or associates degree. In addition to a certificate or degree program, a surgical technologist may be required to pass a certification exam. Surgical technologists are most often employed at hospitals and perform operating room duties before, during and after surgery.

The certificate program qualifies graduates to assist surgical teams in surgery, directly assist surgeons or work closely with the on-duty nurse. The program requires both classroom courses and clinical work, with courses focusing on theory, surgical procedures, instrumentation, aseptic technique, surgical equipment and supplies. Following certificate program completion, graduates are expected to take the national certification examination. Admission to the surgical technology program requires a high school diploma or GED, application, immunizations and maintenance of a 2.0 college GPA.

    The Academy of Health Care Professions - San Antonio

    • Graduates from the Academy of Health Care Professions - San Antonio work in hospitals and surgery rooms, performing operating room and sterile instrument processing duties. Courses prepare students for responsibilities such as preparing the operating room, instruments and equipment as well as passing surgical instruments to the surgical team. The surgical technologist program includes training in several types of surgery: general, OBGYN, orthopedic, urology, ENT, thoracic, vascular, plastic/reconstructive and laser. Courses also cover several surgical sciences including microbiology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, physics, computer applications, and medical law and ethics. Surgical tech students must also practice their skills in operating room procedures, instrumentation and sterile technique through clinical work.     • The Lone Star College System offers courses in surgical technology for a surgical technologist certificate that can also be applied toward an associate of applied science degree. The Lone Star College System offers a selection of fully online courses designed for students to earn credit for coursework remotely.
