North Carolina Carpentry Schools

Those planning to go into the construction field should consider starting off at a carpentry school. Normally it is not necessary to have a certificate in carpentry to get a job as a carpenter but a carpentry school can teach about all of the aspects of carpentry and better prepare students to start their career. Most programs offer hands-on training to teach the skills needed to become a carpenter. You can choose from the many schools in North Carolina that offer carpentry programs.
  1. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

    • AB Tech's Carpentry program in Asheville, North Carolina, is designed to train students to use tools and standard building materials for residential structures. The Basic Carpentry Certificate program at AB Tech includes Introduction to Carpentry, Carpentry I, Blueprint Reading/Construction, Residential Planning/Estimating and Residential Building Codes.

      After completion of the 16-week program, students should qualify for work as roofers, carpenters and other similar jobs. The cost of tuition for a full-time in-state student is about $900 for 2011; the necessary books are normally equal to this cost.

    Guilford Technical Community College

    • GTCC's Carpentry certificate program teaches basic knowledge of residential-type construction. Students learn hands-on use of power and hand tools, along with standard building materials. This program requires completion of 13 credit hours.

      The Construction Supervision certificate program trains students for a career in the management aspect of carpentry and construction. Jobs in this field may include superintendent, foreman or project manager. This program requires completion of 17 credit hours.

      Programs start in the spring, summer and fall and will take one semester to complete. Tuition cost is $56.50 per credit hour for North Carolina residents; $248.50 per credit hour for non-residents, as of 2008.

    Haywood Community College

    • Haywood Community College, located in Clyde, North Carolina, offers a Building Construction Technology certificate program that teaches students about the building construction field. Students learn mainly about general construction, construction estimating, project management and blueprint reading. There are also some classes included that touch on plumbing, surveying, electric wiring and HVAC.

      It will take two semesters and 17 credit hours to complete this program. Tuition costs are $ 56.50 for each credit hour for residents of North Carolina and $248.50 per credit hour for non-residents, as of 2011.

    Surry Community College

    • The Construction Technology of Carpentry diploma program at Surry trains students about constructing residential structures by teaching them general carpentry skills. Students learn about framing, trimming, blueprint reading, foundations and footings through hands-on training, preparing them for jobs as carpenters, roofers and other careers in the construction field.

      This program takes one year and 40 credit hours to complete. Credit hours are $56.50 each for residents of North Carolina and $248.50 per hour for non-residents, as of 2009.
