Interior Design Colleges in the Midwest

Interior design degrees in the Midwest are awarded through departments and programs at art institutions. Programs ask students to consider all aspects of design, from directionality to functionality. The highly specialized nature of the study ensures a hands-on learning experience, while the low student-teacher ratio ensures students receive the instructor's full attention.
  1. Harrington College of Design

    • Harrington College of Design has taught interior design for more than 70 years.

Chicago's Harrington College of Design began as the Harrington Institute of Interior Design in the 1930s. Interior design degrees awarded by the school are Master of Arts in Interior Design; Master of Interior Design; Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design; and Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design. The low student to teacher ratio ensures that students receive maximum attention from instructors in a series of hands-on classes designed to train through doing. The school trains its designers in the artistic and technical aspects of design, as well as interpersonal communication and management.

    The Cleveland Institute of Art

    • The Cleveland Art Institute asks students to consider functionality.

Though not expressly an interior design college, the Cleveland Institute of Art has a degree-awarding department of interior design. Graduates of the school have gone on to consulting jobs in the fields of architecture and interior design. The program is driven by ideas of architecture, commercial retail, and functional and spatial design, and works to develop student ability to communicate ideas through presentations, model building, and drawing. The school's materials workshop gives students first-hand experience with design materials, while off-campus activities expose participants to interior design in practice.
