Interior Design Junior Colleges

To become an interior designer, finding the right program is the first major step. Throughout the country there are interior design programs that offer everything from residential to commercial design. Online programs, courses and even internship opportunities can set you up for a solid career.

    • Joliet Junior College (JJC) offers an associate degree and certificate of achievement with its interior design program. Joliet's website states that one of the main focus of the interior design program is to prepare students to take the National Council of Interior Design Qualification exam. According to JJC's website, passing the exam is required to be a licensed professional in Illinois.

      Some of the courses interior design students will take are theory and fundamentals of interior design, textiles, color for interior, furniture history, codes for interior designers, bath basics, interior lighting, internship, historical interiors, interior details and more. Sophomore interior design students may be considered for internship positions that would give students on-the-job training and interior design experience outside the classroom.

    Santa Rosa Junior College

    • The interior design program at Santa Rosa Junior College offers hands-on training and courses that will allow students to fully grasp interior design. Students can receive a certificate or associate degree through the interior design courses. Certificates of Achievement and associate degrees are offered in commercial, residential and/or retail merchandising.

      Students studying commercial interior design at Santa Rosa Junior College will take courses such as commercial design, blueprint reading, graphic design, lighting design, working drawings for interior design, history of furniture and much more. The residential program offers courses such as interior environment and space planning, interior products, materials and lighting, blueprint reading and introduction to computer-aided drafting. The retail merchandising program offers courses in business management, professional practices for interior design, introductory textiles for modern usage and basic drafting for interior design. Courses are also offered online for distance learning.

    Modesto Junior College

    • Modesto, California is home to Modesto Junior College (MJC) and its interior design program. Courses in interior design are offered as a part of the school's Family & Consumer Sciences division. According to MJC's website, the program is a part of the California Community College Program Plan for Interior Design and will give students the tools to become a Certified Interior Designer. Through the program you can either receive your Certificate of Achievement in Interior Design, Associate of Arts degree in interior design or an Associate of Science degree in interior design.

    Mesa Community College

    • In Arizona, Mesa Community College offers an interior design program that according to their website, \"has been developed by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.\" Through the program students can earn an Associate in Applied Science, Advanced Certificate of Completion in interior design or a Certificate of Completion in home furnishings and materials.

      Students can expect to take courses in drawing and rendering, space planning, residential design, interior codes and regulations, historical architecture and furniture, color and design, fabrics for interiors, among others. Mesa Community College also offers transfer services that will help students go on to a four-year university and earn their bachelor's degree.
