Colleges With a Major of Interior Design

Students enrolled in an interior design major are taught to apply a synchronized methodology, with plentiful research, analysis and an amalgamation of knowledge, to satisfy the requirements of the client in producing and furnishing interior residential, commercial and industrial spaces. On completion of a four-year university interior design major, graduates can join established interior designers as assistants or enter an apprenticeship. Specializations include interior decorating, interior designing, set design, exhibit design, space planner, lighting design and commercial interior designing.
  1. New York School of Interior Design

    • NYSID is located on Park Avenue, which is at the heart of the New York design community. The school offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. Three degrees are offered at the undergraduate level: Bachelor of Arts in History of Interior and Decorative Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design and Associate in Applied Science in Interior Design. The list of graduate degrees includes Master of Fine Arts, Master of Professional Studies in Sustainable Interior Environment and Master of Professional Studies in Interior Lighting Design. In addition to academics, the school has a well-equipped in-house library, lighting lab, CAD studios and design studios.

    International Academy of Design and Technology -- Seattle Branch

    • The International Academy of Design and Technology is a media arts college accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The Academy has 11 campuses around the USA, and those who do not live near a campus can use the e-education services. The Seattle campus branch was established in 2004. The school offers associate and bachelor degrees, with programs in various design specialties. The two interior design degrees offered by IADT Seattle are Associate of Applied Science degree in Interior Design and Bachelor's degree in Interior Design. The campus occupies an almost 50,000 square foot area that consists of lecture halls, seminar rooms, laboratories, design studios, labs, library, cafes and the administrative office.

    The Art Center Design College -- Albuquerque

    • The Art Center Design College has two campuses, located in Tucson and Albuquerque. Both campuses are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), formally FIDER. The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design aims to strike a balance between theory and practical experience for its students. In addition to structured lectures and seminars, the college organizes guest lectures, internships and field trips to provide students with a practical basis for their developing skills.

    Design Institute of San Diego

    • The Design Institute of San Diego offers comprehensive programs in interior design. The institute offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program in Interior Design. Students are required to complete 132 semester credit units over a period of two to five years. Students may opt to study full time or part time. In addition to specialized interior design courses, students also have to fulfill general education credits by completing modules like oral communication, critical thinking, philosophy, world literature, environmental studies and cultural anthropology. Campus facilities include high-tech spacious lecture halls, classrooms, draft studios, a computer lab, an exhibition space, a student lounge and a well-equipped library.
