The Art Institutes are a network of private schools across the country offering certifications and degree programs in interior design. Several of the campuses, like the schools in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City, have been accredited.
There are several large universities that also offer interior design programs. The Academy of Art University in San Francisco awards both bachelor's and master's degrees in interior design, and also offers on-line courses. Also in California, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising has four campuses in the state. The Fashion Institute offers associate of arts degrees as well as an advanced-study program for interior design specialties.
Several schools offer a variety of programs but are mainly focused on their large interior design programs. In Chicago, the Harrington College of Design offers associate, bachelor, and master's degrees in interior design. The Sheffield School, based in New York City, offers an interior design certification.
There are several schools that are dedicated to interior design instruction. Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach, California offers both certification and degree programs. The New York School of Interior Design awards a similar set of degrees. The Design Institute of San Diego offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design.
When searching for a college for interior design, be sure to check if their accreditation is current and in good standing. There are two good resources for this: The U.S. Department of Education's Accredited Institution and Program database, and the list of accredited programs on the Council for Interior Design Accreditation's website.
