Virginia College's Greenville South Carolina campus offers a course in medical billing and coding. Students enrolled in this program will take courses designed to teach protocol and reimbursement procedures for medical offices. Classes include anatomy and physiology, procedural terminology, healthcare common procedure coding system, medical law and ethics and international disease classification. Students will also get on-the-job training where they are supervised in medical billing and coding by a nurse or other healthcare worker. After completing the program students will receive a certificate.

Coursework includes automated billing, automated scheduling, computerized coding, anatomy and physiology fundamentals, and fundamentals of office management and accounting. Students will be trained to analyze patient records and to understand insurance payments and coding guidelines. Brown Makie College's medical coding program is designed to prepare graduates for entry level positions in a variety of settings including hospitals, medical clinics, doctor's offices, nursing homes and home health agencies.

TESST College of Technology -- Baltimore offers a medical billing and coding specialist certificate program. Curriculum topics include pharmacology, medical terminology, management of medical offices, data information processing and medical coding. Before graduating students must complete an externship in a medical setting where they use the knowledge and skills they have acquired in school.

Walters State Community College offers a medical coding technical certificate program. It takes two semesters to complete and aims to teach students coding guidelines and principles as well as coding regulatory changes. The curriculum includes medical terminology, coding and fundamentals of medical science. Also in the curriculum is fundamentals of health information management which gives instruction on the purpose and use of medical records. Students will be taught how medical records are put together, numbered and filed. Course instruction is through class lectures as well as coding software. Among the requirements for admittance to the program are evidence the students has already obtained malpractice liability insurance.
