Schools That Offer Interior Design

Interior design is a specialized field of study that teaches students how to use the creative process to transform interior space into functional and decorative environments. Some colleges and institutions known for their programs in art and design also offer programs in interior design, but there are also a number of accredited schools that focus solely on interior design. These schools usually offer degrees in the discipline at both the undergraduate and graduate degree levels.
  1. New York School of Interior Design

    • Located in New York City, the New York School of Interior Design is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and is a member of the National Association of Schools of Art. The school was founded in 1916 and offers degrees at the associate, bachelor's and master's levels. The school offers a 66-hour associate of applied science degree in interior design, as well as a bachelor of arts degree in the history of interior design and a bachelor of fine arts degree in interior design. Master's degree programs include both a 90-credit-hour master of fine arts (M.F.A.) degree in interior design and a post-professional M.F.A. that is designed specifically for students with a bachelor's degree in interior design or architecture. In addition to these graduate degrees, the design school offers a master of professional studies in sustainable interior environments.

    Rhode Island School of Design

    • The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is a name synonymous with the creative arts. The school is continually ranked among the best art and design schools in the United States by various publications like "U.S. News & World Report." The RISD interior design program is among the best in the nation, despite the fact that it actually offers no graduate or even undergraduate degrees in the field. RISD instead confers a certificate in the discipline that requires students to complete a total of 579 contact hours. Foundation courses include principles of interior design, AutoCad, drafting for interior design, two-dimensional design and styles in the decorative arts. Aside from these courses, students take two additional levels of courses and courses in professional practice such as project management for interior designers.

    University of Cincinnati

    • The University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning offers a program in interior design leading to a bachelor of science degree in the field. The degree program is designed to last five years and provides students with a blend of general education and professional design courses. Students must complete 216 total hours in order to graduate from the program. Of these, 144 credit hours come from coursework, while the remainder consist of studio hours. Courses offered as part of the program include history of interior design, place and dwelling, interior specifications, furniture design, graphic representation and interior design programming and research.
