Missouri Colleges That Offer Interior Design

Interior design provides a practical career option for creative, artistic people. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an associate's or bachelor's degree is required for entry-level interior design jobs. Missouri colleges offer degrees in interior design, along with practical experience and a grounding in general education.
  1. University of Missouri

    • The University of Missouri's College of Human Environmental Sciences offers an interior design degree as part of its Department of Architecture. The program is rigorous and only accepts 40 students based on portfolios, academic record and ACT scores. Students who are accepted gain extensive hands-on experience working with clients on real-world projects and receive a Bachelor of Science degree once they've completed the program.

    Missouri State University

    • Missouri State in Springfield offers a bachelor's degree in Housing and Interior Design. It is a four-year program, with the option of completing the degree in three years if summer sessions are attended. Various study-abroad and shorter study tours are offered each year. The work of senior interior design students is displayed every spring in a special show open to industry professionals.

    University of Central Missouri

    • The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design. It is the only state school in Missouri to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Interior design students are able to take classes through the School of Technology in computer-aided design and drafting. Students interested in special projects may work individually with faculty members. There are opportunities for students to participate in school, regional and national design competitions.

    Stephens College

    • Stephens is a women's college in Columbia that was founded in 1833. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Some of the courses include theory, textiles, material fundamentals, hand and computer-generated drawing as well as lighting. Aspects of commercial, residential, health-care and retail design are covered. Stephens offers a bachelor's plus master's program that allows students to finish both degrees in five years.

    Southeast Missouri State University

    • Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau offers a Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Studies with an Interior Design option. The program prepares students to work in residential or commercial settings. Field trips are available to study residential and commercial design, visit designers and attend the NeoCon Interiors Market in Chicago. Internships are offered with local companies for hands-on experience.
