Florida State University's Interior Design program began during the 1940s as a selection of home planning and advanced furnishing courses. Today, students earn either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts, as well as a Master of Science, Master of Arts or a Master of Fine Arts. The undergraduate program received accreditation from both the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and the National Association of the Schools of Art and Design.
Kansas State University's College of Human Ecology features an Interior Design program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. The undergraduate program has limited space to keep the class sizes low, making the school selective and competitive. Students experience plenty of one-on-one time with professors in order to hone their design craft.
Marymount University's M. Wilhelmina Boldt Interior Design program awards students who graduate with a Bachelor of Arts. Postgraduate students can earn a Master of Arts in the subject as well. The undergraduate course has been accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation since 1985. This program emphasizes drafting and sketching by hand, though the use of computers to aid in design is taught.
The University of Cincinnati offers a five-year Bachelor of Science in Interior Design degree. Students spend the first two years of the program taking foundation courses. In the second through fifth years, students gain co-op work experience. In their final year, students create their own design project as their senior project. The program encompasses other aspects of design with the Interior Design program, such as studying architecture around Cincinnati and embracing art history.
At the University of Minnesota, Interior Design students can earn a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Arts or Science, as well as a Ph.D. in the subject. Undergraduate studies for Interior Design take four years on average to complete. They require 120 credit hours, with 89 to 90 of them being specific to the major. The undergraduate program has held accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation since 1972.
Design Intelligence magazine ranks Washington State University's Interior Design graduate program as one of the top 10 best in the country. The school offers both undergraduate and graduate courses in Interior Design. The Bachelor of Arts program occurs at the Pullman campus for the first and second years of the program. For the third and fourth years, students attend courses at the Spokane campus. Spokane's campus also offers the Master of Arts degree.
