The George Washington University has interior design programs through its Columbian College of Arts & Sciences at the bachelor's (BFA) and master's levels (MFA) where students can get certified with a fine arts degree. Located on the Mt. Vernon campus, the interior design program has been accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
The interior design degree is comprised of 36 credit hours in art history and fine arts. Students can choose from a selection of painting, ceramics and sculpture classes, as well as the course foundations in interior design theory, architectural drawing and drafting, studio residential, studio commercial and studio institutional. For the master's degree students must have a bachelor's degree and at least six credit hours in fine arts or art history.
The Corcoran College of Art and Design provides an interior design undergraduate program with 120 credits where students can explore courses such as color in interior decorating, natural green design and prospective and interior rendering. The Corcoran interior design program challenges students to utilize their creativity and adapt it to business and domestic environments.
The Art Institute of Washington offers students the associate degree (AA) and the bachelor's degree (BFA) in interior design. The entire school specializes in art, graphics, design and fashion, all of which can be useful subjects to an interior design major. The location of the Art Institute of Washington is opposite the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., so students have easy access to D.C. landmarks, galleries and museums.
For admission into the Art Institute of Washington, candidates must have a GED or high school diploma, SAT scores, ASSET scores, a personal statement and an application cost. If transferring from another school, students also need official transcripts, an interview and recommendations. The interior design degree at the Art Institute teaches students about space preparation, textiles, graphics design and lighting techniques.
