Medical Coding & Billing Degrees

Students interested in a career in the medical billing and coding field may appreciate knowing that the United States Department of Labor projects a continued rise of 20 percent in employment for billers and coders through the year 2018. Medical billing and coding professionals keep track of a patient's medical history, medication and procedures through a complex computer system of assigned codes. Coding professionals took in an average salary of $30,610 as of May 2008; people interested in the field may enroll in a certificate or degree program at a community college or through online courses.

    • Break into the medical billing and coding field with a certificate from St. Louis Community College. The one-year program includes classes in medical terminology, basic principles of disease, diagnosis coding systems, procedure coding systems, health insurance billing and reimbursement, information systems for business, human body systems and health information management technology. Students in the program are eligible to receive tutoring, writing and speech assistance, plus have access to computer laboratories and writing centers. There are no academic minimums for admission to the program (a high school diploma or GED are not required).

    Southwest Mississippi Community College

    • Earn an associate degree in medical billing and coding from Southwest Mississippi Community College. Course work includes medical office terminology, records management, advanced coding, medical insurance billing, business accounting, medical information management and keyboard concepts. Students must also take general education coursework, including applied business math, behavioral science, physical science and college algebra. A high school diploma or GED is required. Students with a minimum ACT score of 16 will be given admissions preference.

    Breyer State University

    • Students who prefer to study online for their medical billing and coding degree may be interested in Breyer State University's associate degree program. Each online course must be completed within 10 weeks' time and includes topics such as introduction to current procedural terminology, organizational behavior, medical terminology, anesthesia coding, medicine coding, laboratory and pathology, human anatomy and physiology, radiology coding and medicine coding. Students have access to an online Study Tactics and Resources Center, with online libraries, articles and research assistance. Upon completion, students may sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders exam. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
