Medical Billing & Coding Scholarships

Many high school students graduate with the intent to pursue either an associate or bachelor's degree in medical billing and coding. However, paying for higher education can be prohibitively expensive. For this reason, there are a number of scholarships available to medical billing and coding students from organizations and associations dedicated to the various branches of health information management.
  1. AHIMA Foundation Scholarships

    • The American Health Information Management Association Foundation is a major source of financial assistance for students pursuing degrees related to health information management, including medical billing and coding. AHIMA foundation scholarships are awarded in amounts that range from $1,000 to $2,500, depending upon the type of degree program. In order to be eligible, a student must be attending an institution that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management, and must have completed at least six credit hours of coursework.     Medicalbillingandcoding.org Scholarship

    • The website MedicalBillingAndCoding.Org offers an annual scholarship in the amount of $500 to a student pursuing a degree in medical billing and coding or a related area of study. In order to be eligible, a student must a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be enrolled in an accredited institution in a program of study that is relevant to medical billing and coding. Students must also consent to having a photograph and quote displayed on the website if they are awarded the scholarship. The annual deadline for application is October 1.     HIMSS Undergraduate Scholarships

    • The Health Information Management Systems Society Foundation offers an annual scholarship of $5,000 to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree related to health information management. In order to be eligible, a student must be a member in good standing of HIMSS, and must be in at least their junior year of study. Students may only win this award once, so previous winners are ineligible. Scholarship awardees also receive a free trip to the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition.
