Medical Scholarships

While a career in the medical profession can be extremely rewarding, the prospect of paying for an education in medicine or health can be intimidating. Fortunately, there are numerous scholarships available that can reduce the financial burden of paying for medical school and other degrees in health-related fields.
  1. Medical Scholars Program

    • The Medical Scholars Program is open to medical students currently enrolled in any year of medical school who are interested in pursuing clinical studies or research in the area of infectious diseases. Students must submit a research proposal as part of the application; the $2,000 scholarships are awarded based on the contribution the proposed project will make toward the study of infectious diseases.

Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship

    • The Herbert W. Nickens Scholarship is awarded to medical students in their 3rd year of medical school who have made a conscious effort to address disparities in health care and health education as well as the health care needs of minority populations in the United States. Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded to selected students; applicants must be nominated by the dean of their respective medical school to be considered.

    AMA Foundation Scholarships

    • The American Medical Association Foundation offers numerous scholarships and research grants to medical students across the nation. Scholarships are available for minority students, rising 4th-year students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need, medical students from southeast Alaska and students at selected medical schools around the country. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

    • The National Health Service Scholarship program is open to students who are pursuing degrees in medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery or medical assisting. Students in these disciplines receive scholarships that cover all tuition and fees as well as a monthly stipend while completing their studies. In exchange, students must commit to a 4-year service program in an underprivileged area once they've completed their medical residency.

    Health Professions Scholarship Program

    • The Health Professions Scholarship Program provides full tuition and expenses for medical students as well as a monthly stipend while they are enrolled in medical school. The program is offered exclusively by the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, and, in exchange for scholarships, students commit to a minimum of 2 years of active and/or reserve duty in the armed forces. Students may attend the medical school of their choice in any health or medical-related field.
