In order to be eligible, an applicant must attend a U.S. high school, and must have a grade point average of at least 70 on a scale of 100, or at least 2.5 on a scale of 4.0. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are planning to attend an American college or university. The annual deadline for application is May 29. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society awards scholarships every year to students pursuing degrees in fields related to health care information management. Medical informatics students at the bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. level are all eligible to apply. HIMSS scholarships are awarded in the amount of $5,000. These scholarships are nonrenewable, and may only be received once. In order to be eligible, a student must be an active member of HIMSS and be in good standing. The National Institutes of Health provides scholarship assistance to students to study medical informatics and other areas of study related to health care through the NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program. This program provides an undergraduate student with up to $20,000 a year and is renewable for up to four years. These may be used to cover the cost of tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses. In exchange, a student must commit to working one year at an NIH facility for every year of funding received. A student must also commit to a paid 10-week summer laboratory experience after each year of support received. In order to be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen or qualified noncitizen, must come from a disadvantaged background and must have a GPA of 3.5 or better.
