African American Medical Scholarships

The high cost of education at an American medical university has led to the creation of a variety of scholarships and fellowships for medical students. Many of these scholarships target minorities, who are underrepresented in the medical field. A growing movement exists to give minorities more opportunities to become doctors, in hopes that this will lead to an increase in medical care in low income and minority communities.
  1. American Medical Association

    • The American Medical Association offers a Minority Scholar Award to assist minority students with medical school tuition. The program acknowledges the need for an increased number of minorities in the medical field and awards scholarships to minorities based on academic achievements, leaderships activities, and volunteer involvement. Twelve of these $10,000 scholarships are awarded each year to first or second year medical students. Each accredited medical institution can nominate two students for the award.

Mayo School of Graduate Education Diversity Scholarship

    • The Mayo Clinic offers this Diversity Scholarship to underrepresented medical students, including African Americans. The Scholarship is awarded to help fund travel and living expenses for medical students who wish to attend a visiting four week clerkship program at the Clinic. This program allows participants the opportunity to meet and work alongside doctors, as well as tour and interview at possible residency sites. The clerkship is available at all three of the Mayo Clinic's locations: Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. The awards are $1,000 each and the number awarded each year depends on the applicant pool and available funds.

    National Medical Fellowships

    • National Medical Fellowships is an organization created to encourage minorities to enter the medical field. There are a variety of scholarships offered to minority medical students each year. They offer Need-based scholarships for students in their second year of medical school. Merit-based scholarships are offered to third and fourth year students who have been nominated by their institution based on outstanding achievements and contributions. NMF also has an Experience-based Fellowship Program" that allows minority medical students to earn hands-on experience in the field through various grants. NMF Scholarships don't have specific monetary values---the amount awarded depends on the type of scholarship as well as available funds for that year.

American Association of University Women Selected Professions Fellowship

    • The American Association of University Women, the AAUW, offers a Selected Profession Fellowship Scholarship for women pursuing full-time study in a field in which minority women are underrepresented. The medical field is included in this distinction and female minority medical students are encouraged to apply. The Fellowship awards from $5,000 to $18,000 for a year of full time study at an American institution.
