The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) was organized in 1971 under the leadership of Dr. Lauranne Sams, and represents 150,000 African American nurses. It offers many scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a nursing program, in good scholastic standing, be a member of NBNA and have at least one full year of school remaining. They must provide official transcripts from an accredited School of Nursing, a two-page written essay and two letters of recommendation. Proof of participation in student nurse activities and involvement in the African American community is encouraged.

The National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. sponsors two scholarships for African American women. The Dr. Arnita Young Boswell Scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in an accredited college or university. A minimum of $1,000 will be awarded. The Dr. Wynetta A. Frazier "Sister to Sister" Scholarship is awarded women 30 years old or older returning to college without spousal support. A minimum of two $500 awards are awarded each year. Eligibility requirements for both scholarships are outlined in the applications which are obtained by sending a letter of request and a self addressed stamped envelope to the address below.

The Minority Nurse Anesthetist Scholarship awards up to $10,000 to a minority RN with a BSN to attend the St. Elizabeth Health Center School for Nurse Anesthetists. Applicants must apply by February 15, meet admission requirements and commit to employment with Humility of Mary Health Partners upon program completion.

The Aliene Carrington Ewell Scholarship is available to African American students pursuing an undergraduate degree in nursing, and the Mabel Keaton Staupers National Scholarship Award is available to students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program leading to a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree. Applicants must be members of Chi Eta Phi, possess leadership skills and contribute to the advancement of minority nursing.
