The Tropical Biology Association (TBA) works in partnership with African institutions to offer training in biodiversity research and conservation. African students who are alumni of the program are eligible to apply for the TBA Master's Scholarship, which grants funding for two years of postgraduate study at the Master's level. The scholarship includes travel costs, tuition fees, study materials and a living allowance.
With funding from the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the UPEACE Africa Program grants scholarships to African PhD students in programs focused on peace and conflict studies. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must conduct research in sub-Saharan Africa. The scholarship award covers tuition, living expenses, access to scholarly materials, funding for conference presentations and the dissemination of research. A portion of the award may also be used to fund a semester abroad at a Canadian university.
In response to Africa's needs in the areas of science and technology, the African Union Commission created the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme in 2007. The program enables African students to undertake postgraduate studies in African universities in the fields of energy sciences, climate change, education planning, and water sciences. The scholarship covers tuition and examination fees and offers a stipend. Scholarship recipients must commit to work in an African country for at least two years after completion of their degrees.
The Canon Collins Trust Scholarship awards funding for a postgraduate degree in either South Africa or the United Kingdom. Focused on building human resources for economic, cultural and social development in southern Africa, the scholarship is available to students from Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Angola, Malawi and Mozambique. Award recipients must be committed to using their education to positively shape development in their home countries.
With regional offices throughout Africa, the African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI) seeks to strengthen mathematics training in Africa. Thanks to funding from the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the organization offers scholarships to support the training of postgraduate students in African educational institutions. Recipients receive $2,000 U.S. dollars to study mathematics at the master's or doctoral level.
