Available Scholarships for African Americans

These days, a high school diploma often is not enough to ensure a successful career. It is becoming increasingly difficult to fund a college degree---especially for African American students, whose rate of college attendance is lower than the national average, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. However, there are scholarships available specifically for African American students. It is best to look to a variety of sources for college funding, since single awards rarely cover all expenses.
  1. National Achievement Scholarship

    • The biggest perk of this scholarship is the prestige. African American high school students who score in the top percentile on the PSAT/NMSQT in their junior year are eligible. About 1,600 semifinalists are chosen annually, and 700 finalists are awarded $2,500 in scholarship money. Even if you don't get the money, many schools award automatic scholarships to semifinalists--right up to full tuition and fees, according to GuaranteedScholarships.com.
