Paper Claims Processing is a class that provides a foundation for students so they understand how to process paper insurance claims. It teaches students to evaluate and read a medical invoice and helps students gain experience with posting payments, processing data and building reports.
Health Insurance Policies teaches the students about the different health care policies and programs available to the public. Students learn about the different group health insurance companies and their policies, as well as Medicare, Medicaid, personal injury claims and workers compensation claims. It is important that when a student graduates, they must understand how to properly assess and process all claims, especially those related to personal injury and workers compensation.
Medical Office Management teaches students how to manage a medical office. Not only will students learn generic organizational and clerical skills, but they will also be taught about basic medical terminology and lean such valuable skills as how to verify an insurance card, and how to calculate co-payments and deductibles. It is especially important to learn medical terminology as students will be hearing many terms in the office and must be able to understand this terminology in order to effectively perform their jobs.
Understanding Codes teaches students how to understand and define medical codes. This is an integral part of billing and coding as most claims and bills contain several codes at a time on them. The classes teach students current procedural technology as well as international classification of disease codes, which are routinely listed on health care claims and explanations-of-benefits forms. There are thousands of codes for students to learn as these are essential for properly filling out invoices and submitting payment to insurance companies for services provided.
In an Insurance Claims course, students are taught to collect and submit insurance claims. Training in the classes includes receiving and posting payments, understanding deductibles and how to complete electronic and paper insurance claims. These are all skills that medical billers and insurance coders perform daily.
Medical Billing Software is essential, as students will be using this software every day at their place of employment when they complete the program. This class educates students on the different types of medical billing software and how to add information into medical databases, the procedures to create and perform financial transactions and building reports in the software.
