How to Get an AA Degree

The initials A.A. stand for Associate of Arts. This degree type is offered at many community and vocational colleges throughout the U.S. An associate of arts degree differs from an associate of science. Both are offered by community and vocational schools, but an associate of science typically deals with mechanical, health, business, scientific or other hands on vocations and prepares one to enter the workforce. Many students who pursue an A.A. intend to transfer to a four-year college to obtain a bachelor's degree.

Apply to a community or vocational school. The application process for a two-year college requires that you enter your personal and contact information, enter the name of your high school and your graduation date, and check your intended program of study. Applications are available at the school's admissions office or on their web site.

Submit the application, official high school transcript or GED, and payment. You must submit proof that you completed high school. There is often an application fee, course fees and school fees. Often course fees aren't due until the semester has began. If you don't have the money to pay your course fees, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Make an appointment with an academic adviser at the college. Your adviser will help you select or enroll in classes that you need to complete the degree program. In addition, the adviser can map out an academic plan which will indicate the classes you need to take each semester to complete your A.A. degree.

Complete the required classes. An A.A. will typically require four, full-time semesters of coursework. Common classes are English composition and literature, foreign language, science, social and behavioral sciences, and humanities. You will also take classes specific to the major and electives. You will want to earn a grade of "C" or better in each class.

Submit your petition for an associate of arts degree. Many colleges require that you meet with an academic adviser to verify all required coursework is complete. The adviser will then sign the petition so you can submit it. Once the petition is accepted, you will receive your A.A. degree.
