How to Choose an Accredited School for Medical Billing and Coding

Medical billing and coding professionals are often called health information technicians. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, job prospects are favorable, as the industry continues to grow. Typically, job applicants with at least an associate's degree have more favorable employment opportunities, although health information technicians may also have a bachelor's degree or even a master's. When planning your education to prepare for this career, choose an accredited program.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the website of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Click on the link labeled “CAHIIM Accredited Programs.”

    • 2

Select your preferred program level on the search form. For example, if you would like to earn an associate's degree, click on “Accredited Associate (HIT) Program.” If you would like to earn a bachelor's degree, click on “Accredited Baccalaureate (HIA) Program.” There is also an option for those who already possess an undergraduate degree and would like to enroll in a master's degree program.

    • 3

Select the state in which you prefer to attend school. Click on “Yes” or “No” if you wish to consider a distance learning program. If you already know the name of a specific program you may consider, type in the program's name in the appropriate box. Click on “Search.”

    • 4

Scan through the list of your search results. If you see few or no search results, consider broadening your search to other states, if traveling for school is an option.

    • 5

Compile a list of possible programs that meet your criteria. Visit the websites of each school. Your search results page from CAHIIM links to each school's website.

    • 6

Click on “Programs of Study” or similarly labeled links on each school's website. Find the program for Health Information Technology and learn about the courses that each school offers.

    • 7

Visit the website of the admissions office for each selected school. Schools typically list their admissions requirements on their website. For example, some schools may require a minimum GPA and SAT or ACT score. Some schools also require that you meet with an admissions representative for an interview. If you do not meet all of the eligibility requirements for a school you have selected, cross it off your list.

    • 8

Check the cost of attendance and other fees for each school. This information is typically available on the website of the financial aid office. Compare the tuition and fees of each college.

    • 9

Weigh the benefits and downsides of each medical billing and coding program. Consider how far away the school is from home, whether you are willing to travel, how expensive the program is and whether you meet the admissions standards. Comparing these facts can help you choose the best medical billing and coding school for you.
