Schools for Medical Coding and Billing in New Jersey

The State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development predicts that the demand for health information technicians like medical coding and billing specialists will increase by 10 percent from 2006 to 2016. Positions in the field require a working knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to use specialized software. Consisting of both private and public institutions, there are a number of schools in the state that offer programs for prospective coding and billing specialists.
  1. Camden County College

    • Camden County College is a public, two-year school with more than 23,000 students. The school's medical coding program is accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is offered at the school's campus in the city of Camden. Students in the program spend one year taking a variety of classes, including biology, computer science, medical terminology, health care reimbursement, coding and pharmacology. An internship in a local medical facility is required for graduation. Federal and state financial aid is available for qualified students, and Camden County residents receive preferred tuition rates. An on-site childcare center offers free daycare for children of students.

    Sussex County Community College

    • Between 3,500 and 4,500 students attend classes at Sussex County Community College each term at its campus in Newton. The AHIMA-approved medical billing and coding program at the college lasts for one full year. In addition to an 85-hour internship, students in the program take classes in medical terminology, health care delivery systems, medical practice management, medical ethics and law and electronic medical records. In addition to federal and state grants and loans, Sussex County Community College offers a limited number of work-study placements. Sussex County residents are eligible for tuition discounts. Personal counseling, academic advising and tutoring services are available for all students.

    Healthcare Training Institute

    • Located in Union, the Healthcare Training Institute is a privately-owned allied health school. The school's medical billing and coding class is offered as a day, evening or weekend program and requires 660 hours of classroom work. Among the required classes for the program are medical terminology, anatomy and computer systems. The school offers a payment plan to help students spread the cost of tuition over an extended period of time. Federal and state financial aid and private lending programs are also available at the school. Career coaching, job search seminars and workshops and job placement assistance are offered for all students.
