As of June 2010, the federal government has funding available for individuals who want to upgrade their skills or receive training in a new field. The cost is free to individuals who qualify and one of the approved training programs is Medical Billing. Medical billing is the process of submitting claims to insurance carriers, or patient for services rendered at medical facilities. The average salary for a Medical Biller ranges between $33,000 and $40,000 as of 2010. Most Medical Biller's work in an obscured area tucked away inside the hospital. However, in some cases, Medical Biller's can work in the privacy of their homes.

      Contact your local unemployment office to register for the WIA program. The WIA program issues a grant on your behave for approved training. You will have the ability to select the school and training course that you would like to take. To register for the program you must submit documentation of citizenship (birth certificate, social security card and proof of address). If you are a male, you must register for the selective service. Individuals must be 18 years and older; however youths 14 years and older can apply for programs geared toward the youth.

      Talk to your WIA casework about your intention on enrolling in a Medical Billing program. The casework will provide you with a list of approved Medical Billing schools. Research the Medical Billing schools and programs by contacting them or visiting the facility in person. Talk with the advisors of the schools about their graduation rate and job placement assistance. Narrow down your choices to your top three schools.

      Submit your top three choices to the unemployment office. Your first choice will be considered first, however if there is no room for you in that training class the unemployment office will approve your next choice. Retain a copy of your WIA acceptance papers and visit your approve school. Complete the enrollment process there and register for classes. Submit the WIA approval letter to the clerk at the payment office, as this serves as your eligibility to receive the free classes.
