With an emphasis on multi-cultural education, Southwest Tennessee Community College offers associate degrees and certificate courses in technical, career and transfer education. Southwest is comprised of seven campus and center locations and provides technology assisted instruction and distance learning opportunities. The school offers the basic EMT certificate program, paramedic technical certificate program and the A.A.S. (associate of applied science) in paramedics. The basic certificate consists of 17 credits with introduction courses in emergency medical sciences. The paramedic certificate is 40 credits, including courses with in-classroom laboratory skill building, team leadership skills and clinical application. The A.A.S. program is an optional track designed for licensed EMT's to enhance skills and knowledge in the field. It consists of 60 credits in general coursework, such as English and the science, paramedic coursework, clinical application and an ambulance experience course.

Northwest State Technical Community College is recognized as having one of the highest retention and graduation rates in Tennessee, according to the website. Additionally, 95 percent of students place into jobs within their fields. The Health-Related Professions Division offers the EMT-Paramedic certificate and A.A.S. degree in allied health degree with a concentration in EMT-Paramedic. The certificate program prepares students for careers as paramedics within pre-hospital and hospital environments. Students must complete 38 credits of coursework in subjects like pharmacology, infectious disease, advanced trauma management and advanced airway management. They must also complete three clinical practicum courses, providing hands-on training in a variety of settings like the emergency department, recovery unit and pediatric unit. The A.A.S. program is comprised of 67 credits in general coursework such as anatomy and physiology, psychology, math and speech, in addition to the requirements of the certificate program. It is meant for licensed practicing EMT's seeking qualification as a paramedic.

With nine campuses and flexible online scheduling options, Roane State Community College maintains more health sciences programs than any other two year college in Tennessee. According to the college's website, the job placement rate for graduates of career-preparation programs was 97 percent. Roane State offers the Emergency Medical Services Program with the first responder course, EMT basic course, EMT accelerated course and the paramedic program with six courses. The program prepares students for employment within ambulance or rescue services or private businesses such as medical flight companies or schools.
