The Laboratory Phlebotomy Technology course at Southwest Tennessee Community College trains students to collect and handle blood specimens for laboratory testing and to interact with health care personnel, patients and the general public. Students must be meet a variety of criteria for admission to the program and college, including maintaining a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above and providing previous college transcripts prior to admission.

The phlebotomy program at the Tennessee Technology Center at Nashville trains students to draw blood via skin puncture, or venipuncture, and to learn skills that will allow students to seek employment as a licensed phlebotomist.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, pass a basic skills test with a score of 65 or higher, provide proof of high school graduation or equivalency, submit college transcript from previous colleges or universities, if applicable, submit to a health screen or provide proof of a recent health screen, provide proof of immunity to a variety of diseases such as rubella, rubeola and varicella, test negatively in a tuberculosis test, take a flu shot, pass an eye exam for color blindness, pass a CPR class, be able to lift 25 to 50 pounds and submit to a background check. The course is four months long and includes approximately six weeks of clinical training.

The Phlebotomist Technician program at Walters State Community College requires applicants to have a high school diploma or equivalency to complete the 90-hour program that teaches the student to collect blood from patients for laboratory testing.
Classroom instruction includes field terminology, basics of anatomy and physiology, procedures for collecting blood safely and in a sanitary manner, handling specimens and clinical training to puncture skin. Students must also complete 100 supervised "sticks" in order to be certified, and must pass a tuberculosis test, or have passed one in the past twelve months. They must also pass a background check prior to enrollment.
