Top Ohio Colleges & Universities

The web site diplomaguide.com names five institutions of higher learning as the most prestigious universities in Ohio. The website 4icu.org offers its own list of Ohio's top-12 universities. Three of these universities are listed below.
  1. Case Western Reserve University

    • Founded in 1826, Case Western Reserve University is recognized by the prestigious North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Case offers an excellent education in the liberal arts and world-class programs in applied hard and social sciences. In 2008 U.S. News and World Report ranked its undergraduate program as the best in Ohio, and the university as a whole placed 41st in the U.S. The campus is five miles from downtown Cleveland. Case is a private, non-profit institution with tuition fees of over $20,000 a year (2010 figures) for both local and international enrollees. There are less than 10,000 students in this school.

    Ohio State University

    • Located in the capital city of Columbus, The Ohio State University is the largest university in the U.S. with more than 45,000 students and 5,000 employees. Founded in 1870, OSU is a world leader in academics with a ranking of 61st in the world by the website 4icu.org. The London School of Economics has recognized the political science department at Ohio State as the fourth-best in the world. OSU is also ranked 57th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. OSU is a public, non-profit institution.

    Ohio University

    • Founded in 1804, Ohio University is the oldest college in the state. OU is known for its journalism and communication departments, as well for avionics engineering. This university offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degree programs, and also grants two-year associate degrees and certificate/diplomas. Annual tuition fees range from $7,500 to $10,000 (2010 prices) for local students, and $15,000 to $17,500 for international students. Ohio University exists in a rural setting. There are currently over 17,000 undergraduate students on the Athens campus in southern Ohio, but this school also has locations in Chillicothe, Ironton, St. Clairesville, Lancaster and Zanesville.
