Students are trained in standard safety precautions, venipuncture procedures, capillary puncture techniques and specimen collection for microbiological testing. Course topics include basic circulatory system anatomy and physiology, collection techniques, phlebotomy equipments and legal considerations. A 120-hour professional internship in a supervised clinical setting is also required. Students must hold current basic life support certification (BLS-C) prior to clinical practice.

Internship sites are located throughout southern New Hampshire. River Valley Community College offers a certificate in phlebotomy. This program consists of one semester of classroom instruction that addresses theoretical and technical skills development.
