Phlebotomy Courses in New Hampshire

A phlebotomist is a skilled clinical laboratory technician who specializes in collecting blood samples through venipuncture, fingersticks and major arterial punctures. Phlebotomists are employed in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, private laboratories, medical offices, clinics, emergency care settings and blood donor facilities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of clinical laboratory professionals, including phlebotomists, is expected to grow by about 14 percent through 2018. Currently, three schools in New Hampshire offer training courses in phlebotomy.

    • White Mountains Community College offers a certificate program in phlebotomy. Students are trained in standard safety precautions, venipuncture procedures, capillary puncture techniques and specimen collection for microbiological testing. Course topics include basic circulatory system anatomy and physiology, collection techniques, phlebotomy equipments and legal considerations. A 120-hour professional internship in a supervised clinical setting is also required. Students must hold current basic life support certification (BLS-C) prior to clinical practice.

    Manchester Community College

    • The phlebotomy certificate program at Manchester Community College combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practice and interpersonal skills development. This program consists of an eight-week course, followed by a 120-hour internship at a clinical laboratory or similar healthcare environment. Internship sites are located throughout southern New Hampshire. Course topics include medical ethics, communication skills, professional development, patient care, safety standards, the functions and organizational structures of healthcare systems, medical terminology, clinical laboratory functions and components, basic anatomy and physiology, sample acquisition, clerical tasks and specimen handling, transport and processing.

    River Valley Community College

    • River Valley Community College offers a certificate in phlebotomy. This program consists of one semester of classroom instruction that addresses theoretical and technical skills development. Course topics include anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, healthcare system structures, medical terminology, safety regulations and standards, laboratory analysis, specimen collection methods and techniques, phlebotomy equipment, precautionary considerations and legal issues pertaining to phlebotomy. The second and final semester is dedicated to clinical practice through a 120-hour supervised internship in a professional laboratory.
