College Courses in Construction

Although breaking into the construction field does not generally require a degree, it is becoming increasingly necessary to do so for those who want to advance to management positions within the field. Most college courses in construction are geared towards management. Some, however, simply provide foundational knowledge of building materials and processes.
  1. Undergraduate Degree Courses

    • Bachelor's and associate degree courses in the construction field offer students an opportunity to gain basic knowledge of the construction industry. Courses offered at this level prepare students for entry-level careers in the construction management field. It should be noted, however, that many construction management jobs require several years of practical experience in the field as well. Undergraduate courses can also prepare students for careers as cost estimators, field engineers and lower-level management positions. Courses offered by most undergraduate programs include courses similar to those offered at ITT Technical Institute. These include courses such as Introduction to Project Management, Construction Project Scheduling, Construction Safety Management, Building Codes, Statics and Strength of Materials and Cost Estimating and Analysis.

    Master's Degree Courses

    • Master's degree courses in the field of construction and construction management tend to be more research-oriented and build upon the foundational knowledge established at the undergraduate level. Many colleges and universities that offer degree programs at the master's degree level offer both online and traditional classes. Online classes are usually offered with the construction professional and his busy schedule in mind. Examples of courses offered at this level include courses like those offered at East Carolina University such as Critical Analysis and Evaluation of Construction Documentation, Land Use Management and Development, Legal Implications of Design and Construction, Human Resources and Training, Preconstruction Project Management and Sustainable Construction and Development. Courses offered at this level usually depend on the research interests and expertise of faculty members within the department.

    Doctoral Level Courses

    • Many courses offered at the doctoral level are similar to those offered at the master's degree level. In fact, students in doctoral programs often take classes with master's degree students. Courses that are not common to both master's degree students and doctoral students are usually courses that are more advanced research courses that relate to the doctoral student's dissertation work. Examples of doctoral level courses can include studies in courses like those offered by the doctoral program at Purdue University, such as Analysis of Research in Construction, Construction Operations and Strategic Management, Academic Writing, Advanced Academic Writing and Principles of Leadership in Construction and Marketing Construction Services.
