Four Year Public Colleges in New Jersey

The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education oversees 31 public and 32 private colleges and universities, in which more than 429,000 full- and part-time students are enrolled. Among its 31 public institutions are three colleges offering four-year degrees. All of New Jersey's public colleges and universities are reviewed by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a regional accrediting body.
  1. The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)

    • This liberal-arts college northwest of Trenton ranked No. 4 on the 2011 Best Colleges list of U.S. News & World Report. The school accepted 46 percent of applicants in 2009 2010; admitted students averaged 1210 to 1380 on the SAT and were in the top 15 percent of their graduating classes. About 6,200 undergraduates attended TCNJ in 2009 to 2010.

      Tuition cost $12,988 in 2009 to 2010 for New Jersey residents and $21,674 for out-of-state students.

      TCNJ offers degree programs in seven schools, with 14 residence halls for on-campus students. Its varsity sports program has nine men's and nine women's teams, including football for men and basketball for women.

    Ramapo College

    • U.S. News & World Report's 2011 Best Colleges survey ranked Ramapo No. 25. The college accepted 51 percent of applicants for 2009-10. Ramapo says admitted students usually score 1140 to 1180 on the SAT. Ramapo had 5,600 undergraduates in the 2010 school year.

      Tuition for 2010 to 2011 is about $3,900 for New Jersey residents and about $7,800 for out-of-state students.

      The school offers degree programs in five schools, and offers 10 residence halls for students. Its varsity sports program has eight sports for men, including basketball and baseball, and 12 women's teams, which include dance and cheerleading as well as traditional sports such as basketball and volleyball.

    Richard Stockton College

    • Ranked No. 51 on the U.S. News & World Report's 2011 list of best colleges, Stockton accepted 61 percent of applicants for the 2009 to 2010 academic year.

      Tuition for 2010 to 2011 is $11,455 in-state and $17,309 out of state.

      Stockton offers degree programs in eight schools. Residential students can choose from traditional dorms and apartment living, and the school also assists in finding off-campus housing. Varsity sports comprise seven teams for men, including baseball and basketball, and 10 women's teams, including softabll and basketball; teams also include men's and women's cheerleading squads.
