The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is located in Minneapolis, on the banks of the Mississippi River. Founded in 1861, this university has distinguished alumni, including former NFL star Buddy Bell and Walter Mondale, former vice president of the United States. This large campus has 19 colleges and schools for more than 40,000 undergraduate students. From astrophysics to horticulture to dance, students can find an undergraduate major to suit their educational interests. Student-athletes compete in the NCAA's Big Ten, with many events broadcast on the Big Ten cable network. Founded in 1866, Carleton College is a private, liberal arts school located in Northfield. From biology to Hebrew to women's studies, students have a wide selection of areas in which to focus their education. Academic support is readily available, including tutoring, a writing center and SpeakEasy, a free public speaking and presentation coaching service. All students must take a foreign language for four terms before receiving their degree. Carleton College's 19 varsity athletic teams play in the NCAA's Division III. Ninety percent of students live in either the residential dorms or college-owned houses and apartments. Interested students can apply online via the Carleton College website. An in-person interview is recommended, but not required for admission.

Augsburg College is a Lutheran liberal arts school located in Minneapolis. Its students, known as "Auggies," can choose from various liberal arts majors. Majors include popular academic disciplines such as political science and art history to more unconventional studies like youth ministry and space physics. For students looking to practice their faith, Augsburg offers a 20-minute daily Lutheran chapel service. Those interested in participating in sports can choose from baseball, golf, wrestling, cheerleading, hockey and more. This college's sports teams compete in the NCAA's Division III. With an enrollment of approximately 4,100 students--85 percent of whom are from Minnesota--Bemidji State University was ranked a top Midwest university by U.S. News and World Report magazine in 2009. Students can choose from more than 65 undergraduate majors, including exercise science, Indian studies, nursing and more. Pre-professional undergraduate degree programs are offered in dentistry, law, mortuary science and more. Athletics are an exciting part of student life. The men's hockey team boasts of having the best winning percentage of all NCAA Division I teams and has won 13 national championships. Online degree programs are available, offering several different degrees earned entirely over the Internet. Online degrees include a B.A. in psychology, a B.S. in criminal justice and a B.S in business administration. Bemidji State University also offers associate and graduate degrees.
