Located in Washington, N.J., Warren County Community College is less than 20 miles from the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border. The school is home to approximately 1,800 students and grants an Associate of Applied Science degree in medical assisting. Students in the program take classes in English, computer science, microbiology, chemistry, statistics, anatomy, medical terminology, pharmacology, insurance billing and healthcare law. Students also participate in a medical office laboratory to learn skills for performing clerical tasks in a physicians' practice. A clinical practicum at area healthcare facilities is also included in the degree requirements. The college participates in state and federal financial aid programs.

Dover Business College is a private institution in Dover, N.J., approximately 30 miles northwest of Newark as well as a second branch in Clifton. The medical assisting program culminates in a certificate program and gives students the option to study entirely in the daytime or during evening hours. The program requires 12 or 18 months of full-time study depending upon whether the day or evening program is selected. Courses cover clinical procedures, medical office administration, medical billing and coding, medical law and ethics. In addition to federal financial aid programs, the school offers a limited number of scholarships for qualified students.

With more than 25,000 students, Bergen Community College is the largest community college in New Jersey. The school's main campus is in Paramus, where the school's Associate of Applied Science program in medical assisting is based. Bergen College does not require any prerequisites for students entering the program. The curriculum includes anatomy, health and fitness, composition, computing, economics, clinical laboratory technology, pharmacology, medical coding and psychology. Students complete two clinical externships prior to graduation. Financial aid programs include federal and state programs, scholarships and work study. The school also offers a career services department to help students with their job searches after graduation.
