Medical Assistant Programs in Minnesota

Minnesota medical assistants and students have a plethora of opportunities to flourish in the field. The North Star State's varied diploma and associate degree programs feature courses like Medical Terminology and Phlebotomy, designed to prepare graduates for competitive entry-level positions in medical assisting.     • Dakota County Technical College is located in the southeastern Minnesota city of Rosemount. The college has two programs for prospective Medical Assistants: diploma and associate degree. Besides on-campus classes, Dakota also offers on-line learning options. Diploma degree candidates take classes like Phlebotomy and Clinical Procedures. The associate degree curriculum features the same catalog of courses as the diploma program, with the addition of general education electives. Also, all medical assistant students are required to complete clinical study through externship programs to gain real-world experience.

    Lake Superior College

    • Located in the northern Minnesota port city of Duluth, Lake Superior College is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. The college features a Medical Assistant diploma program among their extensive catalog of health-related career training. Graduates of Lake Superior's Medical Assistant program have 100 percent job placement. Students participate in lectures and discussions as well as clinical study and other fieldwork. Also, they must complete 38 credits as part of the diploma program's requirements. Courses include Medical Terminology, Basic Skills for Lab Personnel and Introduction to Sociology, among others.

    Ridgewater College

    • With two campuses in southern Minnesota, Ridgewater College's Willmar campus offers both diploma and associate degree programs in medical assisting. Disease Conditions, Electrocardiography and Human Relations for Healthcare are just a few of the courses comprising the 72-credit associate degree program and 52-credit diploma program. A general practicum and phlebotomy practicum are designed to help students gain practical experience in a physician's office. Also, students spend the final weeks of the program in externship positions. Upon completion of study, Ridgewater College medical assistant graduates are prepared for examinations to become certified medical assistants.
