Dental Assistant Programs in New Jersey

The state of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development predicts that the demand for dental assistants will increase by 30 percent from 2006 through 2016. A number of public and private schools in the state offer programs in the field. Carrying the approval of American Dental Association, these programs allow graduates to qualify for the Dental Assisting National Board examination, which is required for voluntary certification.

    • Located in Jersey City, the Institute of Health Education is a private school that has provided allied health training programs since 1987. The school's dental assisting program requires 900 hours of training to complete, including an off-campus internship at a local dental clinic. Topics covered in the school's curriculum include anatomy, dental materials, chair-side assisting, CPR, practice management, radiology and preventative dentistry. Day and evening classes are available. Federal and state financial aid is available for qualified students. Academic advising, tutoring and career counseling are offered for students who need extra support or guidance. The Job Placement Service at the institute provides assistance with resume writing, interviewing preparation and job research.

    University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey

    • A public institution, the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark is home the School of Health Related Professions?, which features a certificate in dental assisting. To enroll in the program, the university requires students to have a high school diploma or GED and have access to a computer with Internet capabilities outside of class to complete necessary schoolwork. Students spend 10 months completing the program curriculum, which includes anatomy, English composition, psychology, dental specialties and practice management.     Cape May County Technical Institute

    • Affiliated with the public school systems of Cape May County, the Cape May County Technical School is a public institution that provides vocational-technical training for high school students. The program requires three years of study with students attending classes either in the morning or afternoon, while taking courses at their own high school opposite of their career training. As a part of the curriculum, students complete internships at local dentist offices and clinics and the U.S. Coast Guard Dental Clinic. The dental assisting program is free for high school students who are residents of Cape May County, and local school districts provide transportation to and from the institute. Students receive training in resume writing and interviewing as a part of the required curriculum.
