Columbia is known best as the home of the University of Missouri, but that is not the only educational option available in the area. Several technical schools offer students other career routes. A range of technical education is available to both adults and high school students. Each school offers a niche to prospective students.
  1. Moberly Area Community College

    • With one of seven campuses in Columbia, Moberly Community College offers degree and certificate programs. More than 40 areas of study are available to students at the two-year public college. Moberly offers an Associate of Arts, an Associate of Arts in Teaching and an Associate of Science degree. These degrees are designed to move students to the work force or to a four-year college. Additionally, career and technical programs are offered. These programs range from one-year certificate programs to two-year associate's degree programs. Technical education programs include law enforcement training and health education. In addition to an associate's degree in nursing, the school offers certificate programs such as medical laboratory technician, occupational therapy assistant and physical therapy assistant. Other certificate programs are available in industrial technology, welding, drafting, graphic arts, accounting and computer information technology.

    Linn State Technical College

    • Located 50 miles south of Columbia in Linn, Missouri, Linn State is a small two-year technical college founded in 1961. The college is designed to move students directly to the work force via 25 associate-level programs. The school's campus covers 249 acres and features nine academic buildings, on-campus housing and technical labs. Annual enrollment totals 1,100 students. The school's programs feature education in robotics, auto body repair, automotive technology, aviation maintenance, computer programming, electric power generation, heavy equipment operations, industrial electricity and physical therapy.

    Stephens College

    • Founded in 1833, Stephens College offers four-year bachelor's degrees in fields such as graphic design, digital film, interior design and health information administration. Additionally, the college has a continuing studies division. While Stephens College is for women, the continuing studies division is open to both men and women. Through the continuing education division, students are able to earn technical certificates rather than four-year degrees. The college is on 86 acres in Columbia. The college also serves as a campus for Moberly Area Community College.

    Columbia College

    • Founded in 1851, Columbia College is a four-year college that is associated with the Christian Church. The college has two campuses, the Day Campus and the Evening Campus. Approximately 1,200 students attend the Day Campus, and more than 3,000 attend the Evening Campus, which is designed for working adults. The college also has 33 additional campuses across the United Stated. Columbia College offers both associate's and bachelor's degree programs. Technical degrees are available in fields such as accounting, computer information systems, forensic science, graphic design, nursing and sports medicine.

    Boonslick Technical Education Center

    • Located 25 miles from Columbia, this school offers technical programs for both high school students and adults. Courses are designed to prepare students for a smooth and speedy transition to a career in one of the fields. Program areas include agriculture education, auto body repair, construction and cabinetry and health science. Many courses are eligible for college credit through the center's agreements with State Fair Community College, which is in Sedalia, Missouri.
