Stephens County, Texas Colleges

Stephens County is located in north central Texas, and has a population of 9,674 as of 2000. The county is home to cities such as Caddo and Breckenridge. Several colleges are located in and near Stephens County, offering students the chance to earn associates degrees and certificates, or to complete basic requirements for four-year universities at an affordable rate.
  1. Ranger College

    • Ranger College in Ranger has served students for over 85 years, making it one of the state's oldest continuously operating public two-year colleges. In August of 1925, it opened on the third floor of Ranger High School and enrolled 30 students. Now, the college has a 50-acre campus and serves several north central Texas counties. Students can receive Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, and Associate of Arts degrees. The campus features dormitories and dining halls, but students may elect to commute if they choose.

    Texas State Technical College

    • Texas State Technical College, or TSTC, established 45 years ago, has four colleges. TSTC West Texas has campuses in Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood, and Sweetwater. The college offers programs in a wide variety of fields, including architecture and construction, audio-visual technology, education and training, health science, manufacturing, information technology, business, and agriculture.

    Cisco Junior College

    • Cisco Junior college was founded in Cisco, Texas in 1939 and offers courses on its Cisco and Abiline campuses. Students can earn an associate degree or take classes to be transferred to another public college or University in Texas. Students who want to earn college credit while in high school, adults returning to school, and senior citizens looking to add to their education are welcome. The college offers an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching, and Associate of Applied Sciences, along with many certificates.

    Weatherford College

    • Weatherford College, or WC, in Weatherford offers students the chance to study in over 35 study areas. Students can also train for a career in one of more than 19 professional/technical programs. Class sizes are small, and instructors are highly qualified. Financial aid and scholarships are available, and the college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Around 10,000 students enroll each year at WC, and the average age of students is 23.
