Northeast Lakeview College is the only ACCD institution not located in San Antonio. Instead, it is in University City, which splits its territory between Bexar and Guadalupe County. Additionally, being that it was founded in 2007, it is the youngest ACCD college, as of February 2011. Its 19 programs are dispersed among its four departments: English & Reading; Fine/Performing Arts & Kinesiology; Business, Communication, Humanities & Psychology; and Science. Subject areas at Northeast Lakeview include geology, kinesiology, liberal arts and communication studies.
Established in 1995, Northwest Vista College has more than 85 programs, which is almost five times the number at Northeast Lakeview. As a result, there is a greater diversity of choices. Students can learn history or the humanities, or take one of the IT-related tracks such as advanced Cisco networking and Microsoft Certified IT Professional. Other programs include Mexican-American studies, 3D animation, nanotechnology, Java programming, and peace and conflict studies.
Like Northeast Lakeview and Northwest Vista, Palo Alto is one of the newer ACCD colleges, having been established in 1985. Palo Alto concentrates on awarding certificates and associate degrees in academic and technical disciplines. As of February 2011, there are 43 of such programs, which include library technology; distance education; landscape and horticultural science; turfgrass and golf course management; and veterinary technology.
Founded in 1898, St. Philip's College is the oldest of the ACCD institutions. Its Arts and Sciences, Applied Science and Technology and Health Sciences divisions offer 18 programs, which include natural sciences; tourism, hospitality and culinary arts; early childhood and family studies; and allied construction. St. Phillip's also has a Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education that provides noncredit courses for professionals.
San Antonio College was founded in 1925 and has 64 programs as of February 2011. They include mortuary science, geographic information systems, earth sciences, emergency medical services and astronomy. SAC also includes a Gateway to College program, which is designed for high school dropouts to earn the credits required for graduation while earning them as college credits.
