A Comparison of College Entrance Requirements

Admission into colleges is competitive because there are usually more applicants than the available positions. Students particularly apply in large numbers to colleges which have a reputation of excellent academic performance. Entry requirements vary from one college to another and are also program specific. There are, however, some basic requirements set by colleges of different categories.
  1. Medical Colleges

    • The Association of American Medical Colleges, AAMC is one of the avenues a student can use to apply to medical school. The general application steps after identifying the medical school programs of interest is to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and apply through the American Medical College Application Service. Apart from the MCAT, applicants are required to have completed one year courses in biology, physics and English along with a two year course in chemistry with emphasis in organic chemistry. School specific conditions can be found in the annual Medical Schools Admissions Requirement available in most libraries. The MSAR also can be bought from AAMC publications.

    Ivy League Colleges

    • The Ivy League colleges are a group of eight private colleges that are known to provide an excellent education. The colleges are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale. Harvard University, for example, requires all applicants to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American Colleges Test (ACT) and two subject tests to exhibit their academic accomplishments. Secondary and mid-year school reports are required, along with two teacher evaluations. These are to be submitted together with the completed Harvard supplement and the universal college application forms after payment of a $75 application fee.

    Performing Arts Colleges

    • The colleges that teach performing arts have more specific admission requirements than the conventional colleges. The Juilliard School in New York is one of these institutions. All applicants to the school must submit an application with supporting documents and audition to be considered for admission. The application fee is $100. Official high school academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation should be sent directly to the school by the issuing institution. SAT scores are not necessary but a minimum TOEFL score of 550 is required for non-native English speakers. As part of the application, each candidate must submit a written essay. The decision of the admissions committee is mostly based on the applicant's performance at the live auditions.

    Independent Baptist Colleges

    • Most Christian colleges have similar entry requirements. Crown College, an Independent Baptist college in Tennessee has basic admission requirements that include submission of the complete application form and high school transcripts. Independent Baptist colleges, however, usually have additional requirements for the individual applicant. For most, the applicant should submit a clear testimony of his salvation and belong to a local New Testament church. He must also ascertain his willingness to submit to spiritual authority and abide by the school's code of conduct.
