With a history that dates back to 1886, Winthrop University has long provided education to the Rock Hill area. Located about twenty minutes from Charlotte, the school is comprised of nearly 6,000 students. For freshman students, Winthrop requires competitive SAT or ACT scores and a proven record of achievement while in high school. The school also offers graduate degrees and the requirements for those areas of study depend on the degree selected. For instance, in order to obtain of Master of Arts in English, a student needs 24 credit hours in approved English classes, a satisfactory score on the general test of the Graduate Record Examination, the specialty area test of the PRAXIS Examination or the Miller Analogies Test.
Located in Orangeburg, this school requires potential students to have a competitive grade point average as well as scoring well on the SAT or ACT. The school urges all interested students to apply, even if they feel that they may not meet the basic criteria of the school. Admission has been granted to students who possess talents or skills that could contribute to university programs. The university offers three different undergraduate colleges, a graduate school and over fifty majors and certificate programs.
To be considered for admission to American College of the Building Arts, applicants have to submit high school or college transcripts as well as SAT or ACT scores, and a high school diploma or GED. Applicants also must have an interview with the director of enrollment and submit a portfolio highlighting their experience and completed work. This school is a liberal arts college founded to teach interested students about the building arts. This includes the theory, history and variety of the building arts, not just a skilled trade. Located in Charleston, the school was founded in 2004 and is the first school of its kind in the nation.
Founded in 1842, the Citadel is an historic landmark in Charleston. Students here live in a classic military system that focuses on leadership and character training. The Citadel offers degrees in business, education, engineering, humanities, science and mathematics. Applicants to the Citadel must meet fitness guidelines similar to those used by the U.S. Army, as well as prove their ability to complete college level work. Some applicants may undergo one or more interviews or have to submit a written report regarding their goals in life.
