Community Colleges in College Station, Texas

While there are no community colleges specifically within the boundaries of College Station, Texas, the city shares a border with the city of Bryan. The area is often referred to as the Bryan-College Station metropolitan area and has a total population of more than 175,000 people. Blinn College is a community college with a campus located in Bryan that serves nearly 10,000 students each year.
  1. History

    • Blinn College was founded in Brenham, Texas in 1883 as a Methodist institution. Originally, the school was supposed to train men for the ministry; over time the school expanded and began offering academic courses to the public. All ties with the Methodist church were severed in 1937 when Blinn became the first public junior college in Texas. The school is still one of the largest public community colleges operating in the state.

    Bryan Campus

    • The Bryan campus of Blinn College has been in existence since 1970 and covers more than 80 acres. The campus does not have housing for students but available resources include a large campus bookstore, a library and a learning center which can connect students with tutors. There is also a health center staffed by a registered nurse who can provide health counseling, over-the-counter medications and who can refer students to physicians as necessary.

    Areas of Study

    • Blinn College offers a wide variety of associate degrees which typically take a full-time student two years to complete. Areas of concentration available include agriculture, criminal justice, psychology and business. Once a two-year degree has been earned, students can transfer their credits to a four-year university and work towards a bachelor's degree. Blinn College boasts a high rate of transfer students, most of which go on to Texas A&M University.

    Tuition and Fees

    • The cost of enrollment at Blinn College depends on where the applicant lives. There are three classifications for tuition and fees: in-district, out-district and out-of-state/international. A payment plan is available. In-district applies to students who live in Washington county, which encompasses the main campus in Brenham and the surrounding area. Out-district applies to applicants coming from the rest of Texas while out-of-state/international applies to everyone else.
